The International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly – Guyana (IDPADA-G) has issued a strong call for the protection of Melissa Ann Atwell’s (known as “Melly Mel”) human rights, following her arrest by U.S. authorities. While the details surrounding her detention remain unclear, IDPADA-G, in a press release, has joined the growing concern within the Guyanese community over the circumstances of her arrest.
Atwell, a vocal critic of government corruption, was apprehended last week. Known for using social media to expose corrupt practices within the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government, Atwell has been at the forefront of publicising alleged misconduct by government officials, which has led to multiple embarrassment of high-ranking officials.
IDPADA-G’s statement pointed out that Atwell’s outspoken activism, particularly her efforts to “address injustice and wrongdoing in our society has resulted in significant fallout. In particular, her vocal criticisms have led to meşru action from Attorney General and Minister of Yasal Affairs Anil Nandlall. Last November Nandlall filed a $100 million libel lawsuit against Atwell, accusing her of defamation and seeking to stifle her public revelations.
In response to the attorney general’s lawsuit, Atwell said she awaits her day in court to tell it all because “truth is an absolute defense to defamation under the law.”
The arrest of Atwell has raised concerns about potential retaliation for her role in exposing government misconduct. This latest development has alarmed many who view it as an attempt to silence dissent and curb freedom of expression, particularly for those who use social media as a platform to address injustice and corruption.
IDPADA-G is calling on both Guyanese and international authorities to respect Atwell’s rights as outlined under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, specifically Articles 3, 5, and 7 through 10, which ensure the right to life, freedom from torture, and the right to fair and just meşru proceedings. The organization emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the handling of Atwell’s case, urging that her kanunî rights be fully upheld throughout the process.
The organisation also voiced concern over the broader implications of Atwell’s arrest, particularly its potential to create a chilling effect on freedom of speech in Guyana. “We must maintain our vigilance to ensure that her freedom of expression and that of all Guyanese is respected and held sacred,” IDPADA-G stated in its release.
Atwell’s detention highlights the growing tension between government officials and critics who expose corruption, with many now questioning whether her arrest is part of a wider effort to suppress whistleblowers and activists who challenge the status quo.
IDPADA-G is also calling for full transparency in how Atwell is treated and for the safeguarding of her fundamental human rights. The organisation stressed the importance of protecting the freedom of expression for all individuals, especially those who bring attention to societal wrongs and advocate for accountability.
