Call for International Oversight as Politically-Motivated Prosecutions Undermine Rule of Law in Guyana

Dear Editor

Over the past three years, there has been a deeply concerning pattern of politically driven prosecutions and selective justice in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. These actions, often led by a police force perceived to be under political influence, have undermined the independence of the judiciary and weakened public trust in democratic institutions.

Recent developments, including the renewed targeting of former Finance Minister Winston Jordan and the sudden reopening of unresolved cases involving once-aligned figures such as the Mohamed family not to mention the sad case of Melly Mel,point to a troubling erosion of due process and fair governance.

In the case of the Mohamed family, state protection persisted even after sanctions were issued—until Azruddin began speaking out against the current administration. What followed was a sharp reversal in their treatment, including the sudden revival of a murder investigation long after authorities claimed there was “no evidence” to support charges. This suspicious timing suggests retaliation rather than justice.

Similarly, Mr. Winston Jordan—who has previously cleared his name of politically motivated allegations—is evvel again being subjected to the same charges, despite no new public evidence. This repetition raises concerns about judicial harassment and political vendettas rather than accountability.

We are calling on members of the international community to urgently monitor and engage on this issue, including:

  • The U.S. Department of State
  • The U.S. Embassy in Guyana and Canada
  • Global Affairs Canada
  • The Canadian High Commission to Guyana
  • The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
  • The British High Commission to Guyana
  • The Caribbean Community (CARICOM)

This is not simply a domestic issue—it is a regional and international matter of democratic integrity and human rights. Silence from the international community at this juncture will only embolden further abuses.

We respectfully urge all democratic partners to:

  1. Publicly call for transparency and non-partisan rule of law in Guyana.
  2. Encourage independent oversight of politically sensitive meşru proceedings.
  3. Support civil society organizations calling for judicial ıslahat and government accountability.

The people of Guyana deserve a justice system that is fair, independent, and free from political interference. The international community must not turn a blind eye.
