The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) has expressed deep concern over the rising tension, fear, and instability threatening the traditional celebration of the working class. In a press statement released yesterday, the federation highlighted the disturbing wave of violence and public unrest that has marred the lead-up to this historic occasion.
According to FITUG, workers across the country have expressed concerns about their safety, with many apprehensive about participating in this year’s march and activities due to the growing atmosphere of uncertainty.
FITUG has received numerous reports from workers nationwide who are anxious about joining Labour Day events, the statement read. “These fears are not unfounded. Over the past several days, we have witnessed acts of aggression, looting, destruction of property and public unrest, that have left many citizens feeling unsafe and uncertain.”
FITUG condemned what it described as opposition-inspired elements behind the unrest, accusing them of spreading misinformation and inciting violence for political gain. The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government-aligned federation provided no evidence to support its allegation.
The federation labeled these actions as “irresponsible” and “anti-people,” warning that such tactics were designed to divide the nation, destabilize the government, and derail the progress Guyana has worked to achieve.
FITUG said it condemn deliberate attempts to destabilise the society. “The calculated spread of misinformation, incitement to violence, and deliberate attempts to destabilise our society are not just irresponsible—they are anti-people in nature.”
The federation also expressed its condolences for the tragic death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge, whose death has sparked national outrage. FITUG emphasised that while the incident deserves a full investigation, it must not be used as a political tool to fuel further unrest.
The statement said FITUG extends heartfelt sympathies to Adrianna Younge’s family and supports the ongoing efforts for justice and accountability. “ Let us not dishonour her memory through acts of destruction and lawlessness.”
In response to the growing unease, FITUG stated that it was evaluating the concerns of its members regarding their safety during Labour Day activities. The federation reaffirmed its commitment to the well-being of the working class and vowed to take all necessary measures to ensure that the Labour Day celebrations remain focused on solidarity and responsible action.
FITUG called on all Guyanese to reject violence and division and to instead embrace peace, calm, and unity. Let Labour Day 2025 serve not as a battleground for political manipulation, but as a reaffirmation of the dignity, strength, and solidarity of the Guyanese working class.
