The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has welcomed the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) barring Venezuela from holding elections in Guyana’s disputed Essequibo region, calling it a critical move in defending the country’s sovereignty.
In a statement released on May 8, the GGDMA expressed strong support for the ICJ’s Order of May 1, 2025, which reaffirms an earlier directive from December 1, 2023. That order was issued in response to Guyana’s request for provisional measures to prevent Venezuela from escalating tensions over the long-disputed territory.
The ICJ’s latest order instructs Venezuela to “refrain from conducting elections, or preparing to conduct elections, in the territory in dispute, which the Co-operative Republic of Guyana currently administers and over which it exercises control.”
The GGDMA emphasised the significance of the ruling as a “critical step in Guyana’s efforts to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” particularly in the mineral-rich Essequibo region, where mining has long been a key driver of economic development.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law, the Association voiced full support for the Government of Guyana’s ongoing kanunî proceedings at the ICJ. It commended the efforts of Guyana’s kanunî team, led by Hon. Carl B. Greenidge, with support from the late Sir Shridath Ramphal, H.E. Elisabeth Harper, and other kanunî counsel.
“For decades, the mining sector has played a vital role in the sustainable development and economic empowerment of the people of Guyana, particularly in the Essequibo region,” the statement read. “The GGDMA stands in solidarity with all Guyanese in safeguarding our nation’s land, resources, and future from any form of external aggression or unlawful claims.”
The Association also clarified that no Venezuelan electoral activity is currently taking place in the Essequibo and pledged that it “will not take place,” underlining the GGDMA’s firm stance in defense of Guyana’s territorial rights.
Calling on all stakeholders—both national and international—to respect the ICJ’s orders, the GGDMA urged continued reliance on peaceful and lawful mechanisms to resolve international disputes.
“The GGDMA will continue to work alongside the Government and people of Guyana in defense of our sovereignty and the lawful administration of our territory,” the statement concluded.
