After a temporary halt due to growing public safety concerns and escalating civil crisis, the remaining activities of Linden Town Week 2025 will resume following improved security measures and the lifting of the national curfew. The Linden Mayor and Town Council, in consultation with stakeholders and the Guyana Police Force, have announced the resumption of the commemorative events, with assurances from the Commander of E Division regarding public safety.
The decision to resume the activities was made after consultations with local stakeholders, including event promoters, and following a thorough assessment of the security situation. The primary concern that led to the initial cancellation of events was the increasing social crisis in Linden and nationwide, particularly following the tragic deaths of Ronaldo Peters, Keon Fogenay, and 11-year-old Adrianna Younge.
These incidents sparked protests, vigils, and civil unrest throughout the region, and the public outcry over the handling of Adrianna Younge’s murder by the Guyana Police Force had intensified tensions.
On April 30th, the Mayor and Councilors of Linden had made the decision to halt the remainder of the town’s 55th anniversary celebrations, citing safety concerns and the disruptive nature of ongoing protests and violence.
The move came after reports of looting, road blockages, and public property damage, which had created a climate of fear and uncertainty for residents.
The Mayor in a press release on April 30th said the Council stands in solidarity with the families of the victims and our fellow citizens in their pursuit of justice, but must also prioritise the safety of the community. Consequent to the growing security risks, the Council felt it was clear that holding public events in such a volatile environment was no longer feasible.”
However, following the lifting of the curfew and improvements to security protocols by local law enforcement, the situation has calmed sufficiently for public events to proceed. The Mayor’s Office emphasised that the safety of residents is paramount and thanked the police for their efforts in removing dangerous obstructions on the Wismar shore and restoring order.
The Mayor further expressed hope that the resumption of the Town Week events would help unify the community during this difficult time, noting the importance of fostering peace and cooperation in Linden’s ongoing search for justice.
Linden has always been known for its resilience and unity, and it is our hope that the remaining activities can proceed in a respectful and responsible manner, said the Mayor. “While we encourage participation, we also ask the public to be mindful of the broader national mood, which is still very much affected by the tragic events that have unfolded.”
Safety Concerns Addressed, Promoters Commit to Responsible Behaviour
The Mayor’s office also emphasised that event promoters have been briefed on the importance of maintaining a respectful and responsible atmosphere during the upcoming events. Promoters have agreed to take steps to ensure that attendees respect public safety guidelines and that any gatherings are conducted without disruption.
The resumption of the activities, which are expected to include cultural performances, concerts, and community events, marks a turning point after several days of uncertainty. The decision to restart the celebrations is seen as a positive step forward for Linden’s recovery and an effort to bring the community together despite the turmoil that has rocked the region.
