The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has announced the official launch of number portability across Guyana, a major development that allows both mobile and fixed line subscribers to retain their phone numbers when switching service providers. The move is being hailed as a transformative step for the country’s telecommunications landscape, aimed at boosting competition, encouraging innovation, and expanding consumer choice.
The PUC also welcomed Starlink (Guyana) Inc. as a new market entrant, marking a significant step forward in efforts to bridge the digital divide, especially in remote and underserved areas. The satellite-based service provider is expected to enhance connectivity across the country, offering greater access to high-speed internet.
As part of its regulatory mandate, the Commission has approved residential service rates for Starlink, effective April 21, 2025. Residential customers will hisse GYD $11,000 per month, while a more affordable “Residential Lite” package is set at GYD $7,400. However, the Commission has issued a warning to the public about unauthorized resellers. Several individuals and companies have been advertising Starlink services on social media platforms at inflated prices. The PUC clarified that these activities are not sanctioned and may lead to meşru action under Guyana’s telecommunications laws. Starlink representatives confirmed in a March 17, 2024 meeting with the PUC that the company has not authorized any third-party vendors in Guyana. All transactions, including registration and payments, must be conducted directly through the official Starlink website.
