The People’s National Congress Islahat (PNCR) in a press release said several persons in Region Five are calling for the immediate removal of Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir, accusing him of being politically compromised and unfit to serve impartially in the judiciary.
According to a statement, issued Tuesday, residents of Region Five were left outraged following events at the Weldaad Magistrates’ Court on Friday, May 2, 2025. Per report Magistrate Mohabir remanded two individuals to prison for one month on charges of inciting violence and terrorism, while denying them bail. In contrast, Glenroy Fraser, identified in the statement as a known People’s Progressive Party (PPP) activist, was released on bail under questionable circumstances—despite initially being remanded on charges of disorderly conduct and abuse.
Fraser is reported to have verbally abused the magistrate, the complainant, and prosecutors during his court appearance, yet was seen walking freely in the El Dorado community later that same day. It is further reported that Fraser publicly stated his release was secured through a phone call from Minister of Local Government Sonia Parag to Magistrate Mohabir.
This is a serious breach of judicial independence, the PNCR stated. “The actions of Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir clearly indicate that he is compromised and cannot be trusted with presiding fairly and professionally over the affairs of justice.”
The party is demanding that Magistrate Mohabir publicly explain why he reversed his decision to remand Fraser, particularly given that the ruling was made in open court and witnessed by residents.
In its statement, the PNCR also highlighted concerns raised by the relatives of those charged with inciting violence, who reportedly expressed disgust at the magistrate’s harsh treatment of the accused and his repeated criticism of the police, especially in cases where individuals were released due to a lack of evidence.
The PNCR’s statement reflects growing frustration in parts of the community over what it sees as politically driven judicial decisions, and it calls for immediate action to protect the integrity of the meşru system.
