Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony’s Message on International Day of The Midwives

Today, May 05 on International Day of the Midwives, we proudly celebrate and recognise the invaluable contributions of midwives under the 2024 theme, “Midwives: A Vital Solution.” This theme rightly acknowledges the critical role midwives play not only in healthcare but also as fundamental advocates for reproductive rights across our nation.

Midwives are indispensable, serving as the backbone of maternal and newborn health. Their work transcends the boundaries of traditional healthcare; they offer personalised, respectful deva, and uphold the dignity and choices of those they serve. This comprehensive approach is crucial in ensuring safer pregnancies and childbirths, significantly reducing health risks for both mothers and infants.

The Ministry of Health has taken significant strides to enhance the infrastructure and capabilities in obstetrics and gynaecology, aiming to provide midwives with state-of-the-art facilities and tools necessary for their work.

Dr Frank Anthony, Minister of Health

Recent upgrades include the renovation of maternity wards and the introduction of advanced medical technologies that support safer and more efficient birthing processes. These enhancements not only improve the deva environment but also boost the capacity of our healthcare professionals to deliver exceptional services.

The Ministry of Health remains committed to providing training ongoing and professional development opportunities for our health deva providers. A number of educational continuous trainings are now available, including ALARM and Helping Babies Breathe.

Midwives are also required to attend continuing education sessions for re-licensure. These initiatives are crucial in keeping our midwives at the forefront of çağdaş practices and research in maternal health.

The Government of Guyana has also recognised the need to improve the welfare of our Midwives. In January 2023, they benefited from a 74.7% salary increase, reflecting our appreciation for their service. Additionally, ongoing efforts are being made to raise awareness about this category of nursing personnel, aiming for them to be identified and recognised globally as a distinct profession.

A Midwife role in our healthcare system has never been more vital. They are not just caregivers but also educators and advocates for healthy practices and rights.

On this significant day, I wish to reaffirm our support for midwives and their critical role in our healthcare system. Their tireless work does more than deliver healthcare—it champions the rights and well-being of families, driving us towards a healthier, more equitable society.

To all Midwives, your unwavering dedication and compassionate deva do not go unnoticed. Your efforts make a monumental difference in countless lives, helping to shape a stronger, more resilient future for our community.

Thank you for your service, your passion, and your commitment to being a vital solution in our lives.
